Gunslinger Girl by Lyndsay Ely is the story of Serendipity Jones, AKA Pity, and her escape from her abusive father in a world that I can best describe as a dystopian western civilization. This book was NOT was I was expecting it to be and I definitely do not mean that in a bad way. I was expecting Wild West stuff and shoot outs and horses and dirt. What I got was so much more and was such an amazing story.

Pity has to escape her abusive father who is trying to sell her to another town so she can be used for re-population purposes. Pity and her friend end up escaping but when they are camping overnight something bad happens and it leaves Pity in another bad position. Then, a group comes along, finds her, nurses her back to health and take her back to the place where they are from.

Upon arriving at this new place Pity has to find something she can do to earn her keep. She tells the leader of this place that she is a great shooter. So, essentially, Pity gets a place in this community because she is a badass. But after a while it turns out that she might not be such a badass after all. She chokes a lot when she is asked to perform and that gets her into trouble with the leader.

Pity then has to prove her worth by being the female companion for a man who is to become the next president and would greatly help out the place she is living. From here a lot of things happen but the biggest thing is there is a rebellion against the leader of this place that is brewing and Pity had to decide which side she is going to be on before it's too late. It's scary living in a place when you have no idea who is on your side or who is out to kill you.

Yes, there is a romance aspect of the book but I don't want to talk about it too much because it ties into the bigger plot point at the end of the book. But his name is Max and he causes a lot of problems for the place in this book. But he is also the reason Pity is even alive in the first place.

In the end, this book was far beyond what I thought it would be. I am not sure if there will be any more books added to this but if there isn't I will be kind of sad. I want know what happens with Max and the place she was living. I feel like this book has a lot to offer a bunch of different readers. There are so many themes in the story that I really think anyone could enjoy this book.

Overall, I gave the book 4.5/5 stars.
