I am in love with Rosamund Hodge's fairy-tale retellings. Gilded Ashes was a great book to bridge the gap and lessen the waiting period between Cruel Beauty and when Crimson Bound comes out.
This one was a Cinderella retelling but it had so many different twists and turns. I actually like the step-sisters, Kore and Thea. The step mother went crazy after her husband died. She used to be a decent woman unlike the step mother in the real Cinderella.
Maia has been cursed. But it's not exactly HER curse. Her mother made a death with the Gentle Lord and now Maia must suffer the consequences AND deal with a horrible step mother. Even through all the trials she suffers Maia still doesn't have a selfish bone in her body. I really loved that about her. She would have sacrificed love and happiness just so others could continue to live.
We all know how Cinderella ended. The Prince married her. The Prince in this book, Anax, is a lot different though. He found out his true love didn't love him so he cut off their engagement using his own means to do it. The his father forced him to find a bride and thus began the invitations to the grand ball, celebration, thing. He did, however, have the same determination as the prince in the original Cinderella.
Kore wants to marry the prince so she has Maia do errands to try and convince the prince to marry her. Little by little though the plan goes astray and another plan forms that Maia isn't aware of.
I just completely adored this book. It's a shame about Maia family home at the end but she will have a new home now. And the prince even agreed to help with Kore!
Overall, I gave the novella 5/5 stars.
