Between the Blade and the Heart is thet story of Malin and her journey to avenge the death of people who shouldn't be dead all because fate/destiny intervened. Do we really make our own choices in life? Or is everything preordained?
Malin is in training to become a Valkyrie. During the final weeks of training an event takes place that brings Malin to believe that her mother might not be the great Valkyrie she thought.
After finding out her mother might have besmirched herself and failed at her job, Malin has to try and fix what her mother did but that might be easier said than done when the job of a Valkyrie is to send Immortals to the Underword when their time on Earth is done. The big guys in the sky dictate when it is time for a certain Immortal to die, so the world doesn't become over run with creatures that live forever, so they send down the word to this organization that runs the Valkyries and they give out assignments. If you don't complete your assignment, the world will end, more or less. And Malin's mother appears to have done just that.
So Malin and a team of friends, including one ex-lover, one semi-current lover, one best friend and one random bodyguard that is a Valkyries son, have to go after the Immortal that her mother let live. Once an Immortal escapes death, they become something different, something nearly unkillable. But that is actually the least of Malins problems when it seems like the Underworld is having an uprising and some Immortals might not be too happy with having to stay away from Earth once their time is up.
In the end, this book is really great for fans of the Shadowhunter world from Cassandra Clare. Some people might think the book follows the Shadowhunter plot a little too closely but I really enjoyed this book and cannot wait for the next one! The only part of the book that bugged me was the romance part. Malin wasn't in a love triangle, oh no, she was in a love SQUARE. She thought Valkyries couldn't fall in love so she ended up with a very messy love life.
Overall, I gave the book 4.5/5 stars.
